My wife and I rescued a beagle named Brody from a lab testing facility. The day we first met Brody was the first day in his 4-year life that he had ever stepped foot outside, seen sunlight, smelled grass…and come across all of the scary sights and sounds the world has to offer. Brody’s natural apprehension quickly turned to reluctance, which turned into fear, which turned into downright terror for any and every sight and smell unseen in the world — even the wind!

The internet and books and group classes seem to have a wealth of information on how to calm your [normal] dog’s anxiety, but there is very little literature out there about how to assimilate a lab dog into the world. We had all but lost hope…until we found Gary! Gary didn’t just teach Brody…he taught us the psychology of a dog, and simple but effective strategies that tap into the raw, primal essence of a dog’s motivations and desires. The result is a rock solid foundation for continuing successful growth and confidence.

It takes time, it takes effort, it takes ‘homework’…but 6 months later, our walks have never been more enjoyable, Brody is as confident and curious as ever, and he continues to acclimate into the world in a way that amazes us each and every day. Instead of regressing, Brody has completely turned around since the day he met Gary. We will forever be thankful!

I came across Gary Maria when looking for some 1:1 training for my 2 1/2 year old Labrador Retriever Mix, Dyson.

I’ve tried a group beginner dog training class (at another location), which was helpful and taught us some basics, but as Dyson got a little older he began to develop some behaviors that I just couldn’t break. Dyson is very friendly, social, and attends daycare on a regular basis. However, when out on walks he was the complete opposite. If he saw another dog, biker, jogger, etc. he would bark, lunge, and growl. He’s a very strong dog and I became fearful that one of these times he would break free and get to the other dog. Taking Dyson on walks was stressful and I eventually started taking him for walks early in the morning to avoid other dogs.

During my consultation with Gary, he determined that Dyson had fear based aggression and felt very confident that he could help me fix this issue. Over the next 6 weeks, we worked on correcting this behavior with helpful techniques and lots of positive reinforcement. Practice is key… Each week as we learned a technique, I would spend a lot of my own time working with my dog.

Fast forward to today, I have a dog that is actually a pleasure to walk. I’m constantly practicing and I feel confident, especially when I see other dogs out and about. I even have family members telling me how much they’ve seen Dyson’s behavior change.

If your dog sounds like mine, I would highly recommend checking Gary out!
